I recently came about a different kind of business book. I was so intrigued by it that I had to buy the Kindle edition and read it in one sitting. The book was actually written by a Rabbi – Daniel Lapin – and it explains why many of the most successful business people were and are Jewish. Lapin nicely describes what the Thora teaches about money and human interaction in general. I think the book is a true gem and highly recommend it to those of you who are interested in business. Here is a short excerpt that is highly relevant to our medical community:
Successful doctors don’t necessarily know more medicine than other doctors do. Indeed, most people probably don’t know enough about medicine to begin to evaluate doctors on the basis of their medical skills. How likely are you to check into what your doctor’s class ranking was back at medical school? I know that I have never done so, and I also know that my confidence in my medical adviser has nothing to do with how well he did as a medical student.
How do you choose the doctors, lawyers, plumbers, and car mechanics that you need in your life? You seldom select them on the basis of their technical knowledge or their academic qualifications. Here is the shocking truth: You actually choose them on the basis of their business skills. How they build their practices, how they market themselves, how they develop their reputations, and how they establish themselves in the communities of people…
Nicely put Mr. Lapin. Start refining your business skills if you want to be a successful physician!
