This was the core message of the three delegates of the Young Lions Health Parliament taking part in the kick-off of the European Health Parliament in Brussels: Konrad Fenderich (President of the Young Lions Health Parliament), Prof. Dr. David Matusiewicz (Vice-President), Annegret Schnick (Chairwoman Competitiveness Committee), Björn Moeller and Anne Peters (Janssen) went to the “European capital” on November 21 to share their experiences and learnings with the new European Health Parliamentarians. In our blog, Annegret, Konrad and David share their personal impressions of the kick-off event:
The Health Parliament in Brussels aims at tackling European challenges in the health care systems with innovative ideas and discussions. “As the Parliamentarians in Brussels have only seven months for debating and developing their ideas, the topics of the seven committees are much more diversified, for example e-health or prevention of chronic diseases”, says Konrad. Nevertheless the work also requires a lot of commitment, motivation. The opening session took place at the Google-office in Brussels and short opening remarks were given by three further initiators: the European Voice, the College of Europe and Janssen.
Annegret summarizes: “Exchanging experiences across different health systems facing similar challenges confirmed me that such initiatives of young and engaged health professionals are very important and motivating.”
Similar to the German Health Parliament, the committee members had time during their first meeting to get to know each other, to discuss first ideas, to schedule next steps as well as to elect the chairpersons and the president of the European Health Parliament.
“By sharing our experiences and recommending for example using interactive media from the beginning and establishing concrete milestone-planning, we hope to be of best possible support to the members of the European Parliament”, resumes David.
At the end of the kick-off event everyone agreed: the commitment to and ideas of an interdisciplinary and young parliament – in Brussels as well as in Germany – can be a contribution to establish a sustainable health system and at the same time increase the fun of working on new ideas and solutions.
