Der Vetlesen Preis 2015 geht an Stephen Sparks
Der Vetlesen Preis 2015, quasi das Pendant der Geowissenschaften zu den Nobelpreisen, geht an den Vulkanologen Stephen Sparks von der Universität Bristol. Jedes Jahr im Herbst wird in vielen Medien und Blogs spekuliert, wer die aktuellen Nobelpreise gewinnen könnte. Und nach der Bekanntgabe werden viele Artikel dann viele Beiträge über die preiswürdigen wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisse und ihre Wissenschaftler verfasst. Vermutlich wird man mir gerne zustimmen, dass ein Nobelpreis einem Wissenschaftler eine beachtliche Popularität auch jenseits der Scientific Comunity garantiert. Die Nobelpreise werden laut ihrem Stifter an diejenigen ausgeteilt , die im vergangenen Jahr der Menschheit den größten Nutzen erbracht haben.
W7-X: Beginn des wissenschaftlichen Experimentierbetriebs im Livestream
Kurz vor Weihnachten letzten Jahres wurde an W7-X das erste Plasma erfolgreich gezündet. Es handelte sich bei den ersten Experimenten noch um Heliumplasmen, die wissenschaftlich eigentlich nicht allzu spannend sind. Helium wurde gewählt, weil es leicht zu zünden ist und auch einen gewissen Reinigungseffekt für die Wände aufweist. Morgen, am 3. Februar, startet der wissenschaftliche Experimentierbetrieb mit Wasserstoffplasmen.
