Politikferne Staatsgründer – Die Quäker und Pennsylvania (Part 2)
Es gehört zu den seltsamen Ironien der Geschichte, dass ausgerechnet den politik- und staatsfernen Quäkern (vorgestellt in Part 1 dieser kleinen Blogserie) ein Staatswesen zufiel. Auslöser dafür war der evangelische Theologe und Jurist William Penn (1644 – 1718), benannt nach seinem Vater Admiral Sir William Penn (1621 – 1670). Dieser hatte sich in der Marine einen Namen gemacht und König Charles II. nach einem Umsturz wieder ins Amt geholt. Für seine Verdienste war er zum Ritter und Admiral erhoben worden. Dass sich ausgerechnet sein Sohn diesen vermeintlich aufrührerischen, schwärmerischen Quäkern anschloss, erschütterte den alternden Kriegshelden sehr – und dennoch holte er William zweimal aus dem Gefängnis. Kurz vor seinem Tod versöhnten sich die beiden; William senior begann zu akzeptieren, dass sein Sohn seinen eigenen Weg zu Heldentaten des Friedens eingeschlagen hatte. Als der Admiral verstorben war, stand der König bei ihm dennoch in einer großen, finanziellen Schuld. Doch statt Geld erbat William junior Land in den neuen Kolonien, um dort (s)ein Ideal eines friedlichen, freien und naturnahen Staates mit dem Namen „Sylvania“ (etwa: Land der Baumlichtungen) zu ermöglichen. König Charles II. sprach ihm daraufhin 1681 ein enormes Gebiet – deutlich größer als Portugal – in Nordamerika zu und fügte den Namen des geschätzten Admirals hinzu: Pennsylvania war geboren!
Ist der Mond “billiger” zu erreichen als der Mars?
Im kosmischen Maßstab liegt der Mond direkt vor unserer Haustür. Der Erdtrabant ist sogar noch weit innerhalb des Einflusssphäre der Erde, Dies ist der Bereich, in dem die Schwerkraft der Erde die anderer Körper überwiegt. Da müsste doch eine Mission zum Mond billiger als eine zum Mars sein, oder? Auf Anhieb könnte man das annehmen.
