Pharmawerbung reines Plazebo
Ein Spot für Nasonex®, einem Nasenspray gegen allergischen Schnupfen vom Hersteller Schering-Plough. Schön bunt, nett anzusehen, aber möglicherweise wertlos. Das legt eine Studie nahe, die die Wirkung von Werbung für verschreibungspflichtige Medikamente (DTC-Werbung) in Kanada untersucht hat.
Die Wissenschaftler gingen nach Kanada, da US-Pharmawerbung auch jenseits der Grenze zu empfangen ist und mit dem französisch-sprachigen Landesteil eine ideale Kontrollgruppe existiert. Ausser dem Produkt von Schering-Plough (in Deutschland essex pharma) schauten die Forscher sich die Verkaufszahlen über 5 Jahre von Enbrel® (Amgen, in Deutschland von Wyeth) und Zelnorm® von Novartis an, das letztes Jahr wegen Sicherheitsbedenken vom Markt genommen worden war und die EU nie erreichte.
Bei zwei der untersuchten Medikamente fanden die Autoren der im BMJ veröffentlichten Studie keine Wirkung der Werbekampagne auf die kanadischen Verschreibungsraten. Lediglich bei Zelnorm®, gab es einen kurzzeitigen Effekt. Wobei Zelnorm® das einzige Medikament für die Indikation “Reizdarmsyndrom” auf dem Markt war. Enbrel® und Nasonex® müssen sich gegen Konkurrenten aus der gleichen Wirkstoffklasse behaupten.
Der durchschnittliche US-Konsument sieht täglich neun Werbespots für Medikamente. Information overload?
Der Leiter der Studie weist auf einen Aspekt hin, der die Pharmawerbung nicht nur für die Unternehmen kostspielig macht.
Diese indirekten Kosten sollten nach der geplanten Lockerung des Werbeverbots in der EU im Auge behalten werden.

Möglicherweise ahnen dies die Pharmaunternehmen auch in Europa und haben bei der anstehenden Liberalisierung des Werbeverbots auf die Freigabe der Werbung verzichtet. Stattdessen setzt die EU-Kommission mit Unterstützung der Pharmaindustrie auf die subtilere Information des Patienten.
