Er rechnet vor, dass alleine die Flüge der Teilnehmer zu 20 grossen Medizinertagungen in den USA jährlich einen Ausstoss von 600000 Tonnen Kohlendioxyd erzeugen. Das entspräche dem “Kohlenstoff-Fussabdruck” von einer halben Millionen Indern oder die Menge, die 120 Millionen Bäume im Regenwald aufnehmen. Die Energie für die Hotels, Kongresszentren und das Damenprogramm für die Begleitung nicht eingerechnet.
Alternativen gibt es bereits. In den Kommentaren zu dem Artikel berichtet ein Arzt von einer virtuellen Konferenz an der 1600 Hausärzte aus 65 Ländern teilgenommen hatten. Wenn der Tagungstourismus wegfallen würde, wäre das besonders für Medizinjournalisten bitter. Die kämen nicht mehr an nette Orte und in schicke Hotels, die sie sich privat nie leisten könnten.
